The deep red beam of his lightsaber seems to swallow light when it springs from its hilt. He doesn’t draw it often; no, Aush knows there are easier ways - better ways - to bring a man to his knees than the violent threat of a severed head and the low buzz of his weapon. He walks in circles, always calculating options, making a hundred little decisions in the way he carefully paces around, playing up a limp he’s long since outgrown as he leans on his mechanical leg. I don’t want to fight you, friend, always punctuating the word friend as it rolls off his serpentine tongue, smile cutting deeper than his saber will.
The others all had a right to fall. The Jedi should have seen it coming; they were a generation forged in a ruined temple, heralded only by screams. They had tasted violence before they understood war; darkness seeped in early like blood between cracks. They toppled one another and fell one by one. Of course they became monsters - no matter what they did they’d still see black cloaks and red sabers when they closed their eyes at night. There was no rest. They were born to fall.
When they stepped over the strewn corpses of clanmates Aush skipped over hopscotch lines drawn in chalk. Maybe that was the problem - they took Aush from his parents too late, when he’d already begun to nurse selfish aspirations and attachments the Order had been too lax in snuffing out. Aush never really fell. You can’t fall on your feet; he defected with a plan in his head, all too ready to leave the order and feed the ambition he’d always been nursing.
He had no right to succumb to darkness, but it was just as inevitable - the moment the brown-robed recruiter knelt to his level and placed a hand on his shoulder, you have a gift, it was sealed.
